"We can rapidly build enterprise-class software deployed at a fraction of the cost of other frameworks. The integrated Adobe development platform allows us to quickly release Adobe AIR applications that run independently of platform and in occasionally connected environments, providing greater resiliency in a mission-critical setting."
- Kevin Chesney, CEO, Acesis, Inc.
Acesis, Inc.
Using the Adobe® AIR™ platform, Acesis Point-of-Care™ helps physicians quickly capture clinical patient information in a revolutionary manner, improving patient care and increasing office efficiency.
As proven experts in managing and protecting data in financial services, the development team at Acesis® turned its attention to the Electronic Health Record (EHR) market where the vast majority of small and medium-sized medical practices avoid EHR solutions—for good reasons. "Smaller physician groups simply do not have the technical or financial resources to support today's expensive EHR systems," says Kevin Chesney, CEO at Acesis. "Three-quarters of physicians haven't adopted an EHR because, up until now, software hasn't been able to compete with pen and paper where it really matters: at the point of care. Acesis regards ease-of-use by physicians as our highest priority."
Acesis is seizing the opportunity to serve smaller and mid-sized out-patient practices by providing lightweight EHR software that is accessible: easy to afford, easy to install, and easy to use. "Acesis Point-of-Care enables doctors to engage with elegant, easy-to-use adaptable templates during a physical exam without having to connect to the Internet or navigate traditional forms," says Chesney. The innovative firm is delivering applications for doctors and patients deployed as both Adobe AIR desktop applications and as web-based, Rich Internet applications (RIAs).
Improved Patient Care
Acesis leverages the power of developing in Adobe Flex™ and deploying applications in Adobe AIR, thus realizing the benefits of a RIA on the desktop. Acesis Point-of-Care enables medical staff to capture clinical observations with forms (known as templates), that expand dynamically to present related observations based on patient attributes and prior observations. The dynamic digital forms are easy to use and intelligent. "If a physician notes the presence of a heart murmur, for example, the template dynamically expands to prompt for additional information relating to vital details of the murmur," explains Stephanie Bloom, M.D, chief medical officer at Acesis. "If a nurse is triaging a patient with a cold but the patient is known to have asthma, then relevant questions about the patient's asthma management appear, so by the time the physician sees the patient a more complete history has been obtained. The dynamic nature of Acesis forms promotes quality, enhances efficiency of data capture, and expands the functionality of office staff." Structured data is backed by a vast medical nomenclature that makes forms remarkably easy to customize and provides benefits for analytics and decisioning.
Templates are provided to cover a large array of clinical encounters, and the software is designed to make template creation as easy as possible, even for those physicians who are not computer savvy. "We've removed Professional Services from the process of template creation," says Dr. Bloom. "We are empowering health professionals to quickly decide how a form should look and to use it to capture clinical data while offline, online, or in an occasionally connected environment."
Internet access cannot always be assured in health visits, and Acesis leverages the advanced capabilities of Adobe LiveCycle® Data Services to handle network failures and to securely transmit patient data to its server when connectivity is restored. Patient privacy standards are ensured in compliance with government regulations.
