Blueprint

Welcome to the preview release of project "Blueprint." Blueprint is a plugin for Adobe® Flash® Builder™ 4.7 that allows users to query for Adobe Flex and Adobe Flash code examples found on the Web directly inside of the development environment. The purpose of this preview is to assess the level of community interest in this type of customized search interface for code examples.

With Blueprint, Flex and Flash developers can now query for sample code just as easily as they use auto-complete. Blueprint brings the power of the entire Web inside of the Flash Builder development environment and provides sample-centered search results that allow the user to quickly look through many different examples from many different websites including documentation, blogs, and forums.

Use Blueprint’s code search from your browser

Want to try out Blueprint without installing the Flash Builder extension? You can use Adobe’s Community Help to search for code snippets from within your Web browser. Try it out.

Note: The Blueprint preview is prerelease software that is not supported by Adobe and may contain bugs. We welcome your feedback, so please use the feedback link below to request features, make comments and report problems. Please also note that this is a research project and there is no assurance that there will be a shipping version of Blueprint.

Blueprint is the temporary internal name of this technology. The final name has not been determined.

Getting Started

Follow these steps to get started with the Blueprint:

  1. Flash Builder 4.7 for Macintosh is required to use Blueprint. If you do not have either installed, download a trial of Flash Builder 4.7. Prerelease or beta versions of Flex Builder and Flash Builder are not supported.

Using Blueprint

What is Blueprint?

"Blueprint" is the code name for a research project at Adobe that takes the form of a plugin for Flex Builder 3. Blueprint allows users to query for code samples directly inside of Flex Builder 3 removing the need to go back and forth between a browser and the development environment. With Blueprint a user can type queries into their code and retrieve code samples found on the Web in documentation, blogs, and forums.

How is Blueprint different from a search engine like Google, Yahoo, or MS Live?

Unlike general search engines, which display lists of hyperlinks to potentially useful webpages, Blueprint displays examples as search results. Each example includes code and some English description. With Blueprint developers can quickly look through several potential examples and directly inject the most appropriate example in their code without switching their attention to a separate browser.

Are Blueprint results as good as those at Google, Yahoo, or MS Live?

Blueprint finds appropriate content using Google’s Custom Search Engine Service and so the code examples it displays are based on the search results one would see when using Google to look for code samples.

When will Blueprint work on Windows?

We are working on a Windows version of Blueprint. For now only a Mac version is available.

Documentation

The following documentation is available for the Blueprint preview:

System Requirements

Blueprint is currently only supported on Macintosh systems running OS X 10.6 or later and Safari 5 or later. Blueprint may work on other systems, but is unsupported at this time.

Other system requirements for Blueprint are the same as that for Flash Builder 4.7 because Blueprint runs as a plug-in. Please see the Flash Builder System Requirements.

Also, because Blueprint makes queries using the Web, it requires an Internet connection.

Release Notes

This release of Blueprint is prerelease software and is designed for evaluation purposes only. The software contained within each download is not final; but, many portions of the technology are fully implemented. We invite you to give us feedback and propose improvements in the Blueprint forum.
