Talk:AIR:Developer FAQ
From Adobe Labs
Use this page to discuss the Apollo FAQ.
Unanswered questions:
The runtime itself will be free, so there are no costs to download for the end-user. Will there be per-app, per-user, or other licensing costs to the developer? How will the Apollo APIs be licensed?
In the ActionScript database driver scenario, would the end-user need to have the database server installed or could the Apollo installer assist in installing a database? In other words, can the Apollo installer be used to script the installation of other non-Apollo apps?
When will there be a Linux version?
Will applications built for Apollo be able to auto-update?
Will there be a File IO sandbox that prevents one application from reading data stored by another application?
Can Apollo applications communicate with USB devices?
Will Apollo have a threading API?

Will Apollo support Flash Remoting?
I see so much development focused on Flex but, where does flash remoting fit into Apollo?
What's the point of this area in the website.. i came here for an answer.. so will it/won't/does it support Flash Remoting?
Will Apollo have a 3D API?
And will it be possible to take advantage of 3D hardware acceleration?
Knowing the amount of currently available flash games, native hardware support would be very useful.
Linux Support
A Linux implementation that only requires XFree86 would be incredible. This is along the lines of the always discussed flashOS. If we could run Apollo Flex applications on a cut down version of Linux we could boot into our Apollo applications and make console style applications. This is something that currently requires a third party tool such and a lot of scripting in order to execute.
Library interface
There are several C++ library's that I want to be able to call. An implementation such as Java's JNI would allow me to increase the scope of applications that I can develop. Examples of external library's that I would instantiate.
- XML Parsing
- Visual Image recognition
- Com and USB devices (GPS)
- Game controllers
Another Progrmming languages...

Do fscommands work in this version of Apollo?

Webkit version
What version of Webkit is the alpha using and when can we expect an update (and how frequently) to the latest version? The nighlty builds are adding a lot CSS3 features like box shadows and rounded corners.
pdf - will it be possible to generate pdf files?
pdf support sounds good. But will there be the possibility to generate pdf files (for web and print)?
In addition, will Apollo be able to take adavantage of other PDF type features. Specifically, can it perform searches for keywords/key phrases across PDF files being displayed within the application? If there were 20 PDF files to display on the app, I would like to search across all 20 pdf files for offending words/phrases.
Also, will it be able to modify the PDF for "cropping" options as in acrobat?
Thanks, Bob
Filetype Icon and Launch Instruction
Is it possible to associate a specific/custom icon with the filetype assocaited with the application. Also is it possible to send the application an instruction on launch from said file (ie use function to load this files content) Thanks, Dave
Desktop sharing and integration with FMS
Wish to know, With Appolo, I would be able to extend my existing video conference application to add this feature. Use of FMS is possible?
Linux support requires flash finalization?
Under AIR:Developer_FAQ#Does_Adobe_AIR_support_Linux.3, the article mentions that Flash 9's linux finalization is a cause for the delay in AIR's Linux support. Flash 9 has been finalized on linux already, right? Could the verbiage on the page be updated to reflect this? Thanks in advance. --Jim Wilson 12:44, 13 Aug 2007 (PDT)
