Tree view

All examples I've seen so far, using Tree view, show the "grouping folder" with no data in the columns. Data are displayed in the leaf nodes only.

Isn't the whole point with grouping to get a drill-down experience? Having aggregated sums and information at the top nodes, getting more detailed as you click yourself down, finally ending up at the leaf? Not just a list of planet types (ref the AdvancedDataGid examples here at Adobe Labs).

Have I just not seen the right examples / documentation, or it this feature not (yet?) implemented in AdvancedDataGrid...

Flexible Tree View

This feature is probably a mix between Tree View and Multi column sorting: User controlled drill down of numbers in a "cube of data". (A lot of information can be structured as an n-dimensional cube, that you can turn into a tree from virtual any corner. )

Imagine some sales figures, grouped at top level per sales team, showing aggregated sums for product groups, number of sales reps, annual total sale.

The user can choose whether she wants to drill down by (ctrl-?)clicking on products, reps or total sale, to drill down on product groups, each sales rep, or quarterly/monthly sales respectively.

One grid - one user interface object - all the data - from the point of view you want.

It will need some tinkering about to do this visually comprehensible for the user, but I reckon this would be a really really nice thing to be able to do. Visual clues is needed for what can be used for drilling, etc.

Anyone getting the picture? Or am I on a wild tour off any beaten track. And alsa, if there are better places to discuss this, please give a yell. <vegard at eprocess dot no>.
