Well I wrestled with the example and several variations from other sites, but I kept getting a compile error about a 'call to a possibly undefined method getInstance'. It wasn't until I changed my project to actually compile onto a real web server that this was resolved. I've no clear idea why this didn't work when trying to test locally, but seems to be fine if you are testing on a server.
